IN PARIS WITH VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

Time flies when you’re having fun! Already a few weeks since Paris Fashion Week… About time I gave you a quick report, or at least some pix, of my highlight of that week which was the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label show on place de la Concorde Friday 4th March. As usual I did the music in conjunction with Vivienne and her husband Andreas. We’d been working together on the soundtrack of the Man show in Milan in January (euro disco), then the Red Label show in London late February (70s rock + electro), so this time we had to come up with something fresh (and different if possible). As ever Vivienne pushed for her beloved classical. Her favorites, Tchaikovsky, Mahler… and a couple of recent discoveries too. I managed to squeeze in the great Weatherall remix of The Shoes’ new single, which the couple instantly fell in love with (the fact that Vivienne, forever an old rocker, is a bit of a Link Wray fan could explain) as well as this great intense remix of The Chemical Brothers. What a band! Still rocking like there’s no tomorrow, still so melodic and inspiring… A bit underestimated in my opinion, no other band has ever had so much creative flair and stamina in combining that typical (British?) rock feel, rebellious and stylish, and the world of electronics. Then we picked up some strong female singers/songs because Vivienne had the women of the world as theme for this collection. Strong women who won’t get enslaved, who will unite and fight back. A beautiful theme if there ever was one. I prepared the mix but knew that making it work it together wouldn’t be easy with not that many beats to sync and seg together, classical is not that dj-friendly surprisingly, once you’re in it’s not that easy to go into something else. So thumbs up to JBAG’s other half Andrea Gorgerino who as usual did a brilliant job at blending it all together with his magic fx palette. The hands-on Italian even programmed extra percussion and music to link some of the tracks this time. Mixed perfectly and dramatically the soundtrack becomes this little aural film that really takes you places if you give it a bit of time. Check it out on my Soundcloud. I’ve also uploaded the recent soundtracks I did for Matthew Williamson (which I did for the first time, another great full-of-attitude show/music including Lykke Li, Best Coast, Four Tet, Pilloski…) and Michael Van Der Ham who got me to fully re-edit and dub out Future Sound of London’s classic ‘Papua New Guninea’, Dubstar and Cocteau Twins, one of my teens’ crush (another first collab that proved highly enjoyable).
