ARKEN, Copenhagen

With an unexpected location in Ishoj, only 15 kilometers south of Copenhagen, ARKEN Museum of Modern Art opened in 1996 as part of the Copenhagen, Europe Capital of Culture plan. Designed by 25 year old architect Soren Robert Lund, still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at this time, its white concrete/stranded ship structure lies just a few meters from the beach.

The museum shelters an impressive permanent collection of some 300 works of Art, from young nordic talents to world-renowned artists such as Damien Hirst, Wolfgang Tillmans and Olafur Eliasson.
The latter is also currently showing Your Blind Passenger, a 90 meter long tunnel whose dense fog instantly blurs the visibility and senses of visitors that experience it.

As a temporary exhibition, ARKEN just displayed the work of german artist Anselme Reyle. Based in Berlin, Reyle creates large-scale abstract paintings and multimedia sculptures. His use of found objects, crumpled silver foil, neon colours and mirrors gives his work a striking edge.

Arken is probably one of the most undiscovered art museums of Copenhagen. If you’re planning a late summer vacation in this part of Europe, it’s definitely a must see.
