Back Yard Projects, New York: VIS-A-VIS

Installation view, VIS-A-VIS

This weekend, Back Yard Projects, a collectively organized project space I founded with artists Sean Keenan, Josie Keefe, and Anne Kunsemiller early this year in the East Village NYC, opened its doors one last time to celebrate a season of site-specific exhibitions and programs. The 2011 season featured installations by American artists Nathaniel de Large, Juan Antonio Olivares, Scott Keightley, Morgan Silver-Greenberg, and performances by Andrea Merkx, Sarah Elliott, and collective BFFA3AE.

The final exhibition, VIS-A-VIS,  investigates the collaborative connections developed throughout the season. In an effort to give a physical presence to the channels of communication opened through this experience, each BYP collaborator invited several artists to exhibit in the space. The result is a conversation among eighteen local and international artists touching on spatial intervention, ambiance, community, and the uncanny. The grand finale took the form of a Halloween party and featured a special performance by The Ice Machine and Swift (Graham Watling and Nathan Gwynne), with a guest appearance by the first New York blizzard of the year.
