JERRY RECORD REVIEWS – September
New year school, new heading!
On the lookout for the latest releases, our dear friend Jerry Bouthier will tell us each month his favourite singles and albums!
SINGLES :
RÜFÜS – ‘This Summer/Selena (remixes)’ – (CONTINENTAL)
Out now on my digital label Continental comes this EP of remixes from Sydney’s latest electropoprock sensation, RÜFÜS, a hot trio who looks set to big things. Oz’s finest dj/producers have queued up to rework two of the band’s tracks. On ‘This Summer’ Softwar, Parachute Youth and RÜFÜS themselves deliver evocative interpretations in varied deep-ish moods whereas JBAG – my studio project with Andrea Gorgerino – goes for an irresistibly pop makeover. Next ‘Serena’ gets re-jiggled by promising newcomer Lancelot and Frames. Ch-ch-check it out.
BLACK STROBE – ‘Boogie In Zero Gravity/White Gospel Blues’ – (BLACK STROBE RECORDS)
Arnaud Rebotini puts his solo trip on hold to bring back his long-running project Black Strobe, very much a band these days as he’s long wished for. Fully integrated in the writing as showcased on this bumper single that’s spearheading their forthcoming album, the musicians inject vital blood-pumping life into Rebotini’s robodisco engineerings. On the cow-bell led ‘Boogie In Zero Gravity’ song the Parisians come across as LCD Soundsystem’s distant European cousins, slide guitar and goth drama optional. On the hypnotic and groovy ‘White Gospel Blues’, the guitarist lets loose brilliantly for some vibey George Benson impros. Remixes by Drop Out Orchestra, Jeremy Glenn, Hot Toddy, Elijah Collins and Populette complete this ace package.

STUCK IN THE SOUND – ‘Brother (Yuksek remix)’ – (DISCOGRAPH)
Not so sure what this French lot’s like, rock band I hear, but in the hands of Yuksek, one of the most consistent French artists/producers since les Daft, their new single ‘Brother’ turns into the kind of fab infectious electrofunk Prince would make today if hung out in east London). Unshamedely sensual and glam, the high-pitched male vocal (in all its glorious Gallic overtones) sits perfectly on top of the expertly chiselled pumping groove. Another spot-on remix (that’s gonna get lots of plays) from the Champagne don. Click here to listen to it!
ALBUM :
TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS- ‘TROUBLE’ – (POLYDOR)
With its post modernist stance the DIY generation often disregard traditional songwriting in favour of quick cut & paste ethics on cracked softwares. Now youngster Orlando Higginbottom aka T.E.E.D. is of a slightly different ilk. Sure he does put a bit of this, a bit of that in the blender (house, electro, drum & bass, pop, rave…), yet being the son of an Oxford music teacher has made him a very skilled chap with a feverish mind full of cascading chords and stunning hooks. His frail but in tune boy-next-door vocal deliveries are the icing on the cake to his high-powered melodic contents. Music needs more prodigal sons like T.E.E.D.
