Crayon & Pyramid Interview + Exclusive Mixtape!
Crayon & Pyramid, the two new cool French producers and selfmade djs, have just released a fizzy EP together called “So Far Gone” on Kitsuné.
They did an exclusive mixtape for Discobelle which you can get on their website or below!
And as they just held their proper release party with Yuksek as a guest and did a show in Japan with BeatauCue, LOGO and Gildas, we interviewed them about their feelings and upcoming exciting news! Read it below:
What did you want to express in “So Far Gone”?
We composed the music for “So Far Gone”, which has a dominant nostalgic feel to it. Yet some parts come with a more hopeful, laidback atmosphere. We think the singer Golden Retriever did a great job with the words since it basically translates these emotions with the lyrics. You know, “Can We Try, etc…”
Was it intimidating or thrilling to make your proper release party with Yuksek as a guest?
He is definitly one of our biggest influences. It was quite challenging for us two since I (Crayon) got to play before him and Pyramid got to play after.
And what about your live in Tokyo at the Kitsuné Club Night French Kiss Invasion, with Gildas, BeatauCue and LOGO?
This party was pure insanity, we both had our best party ever, played our best sets to the most enthusiastic crowd!
Is Tokyo’s audience really different from the French one?
To be honest, French audience is much more difficult, you have to play fresher, more hip stuffs and etc. While in Japan, from what we experienced, it seems they care more about the energy of your set rather than the tunes.
Your best live memory?
Pyramid: I would say Tokyo for both us.
Crayon: Tokyo and also Montreal with my friends Jupiter. Great memories!
What are your musical influences?
Crayon : We share some similar influences, but in quite different ways and for very different reasons. I’m really into this late 70’s pop thing, acts like Supertramp or Alan Parsons. I’m also a big funk lover, Change is one of my favourite band, and I grew up listening to “Thriller” on repeat like billions of other kids.
Pyramid : Sci-fi / ambiant stuff, I’m a huge fan of Alan Parson’s Project as well, Justice, Supertramp, Boards of Canada or Royksopp for example, I’m not a huge listener of groovy / disco stuff, I find more of myself in melody or long dreamy pads.
Apart from music, do you share other passions together?
Pyramid : We share a lot of stupid passions that we won’t talk about here… We are both big videogame players and I’m also a big movie / TV show consumer.
Crayon: Well I used to draw and paint before I started making music. I don’t really have the time to keep it up but I’m still into arts, I love that new kind of expressionist thing from that “crew” called Black Market. Ben Tour is my favourite out of them all.
What’s next for both of you?
Pyramid: For now we’re both starting to play some gigs here and there. I’m about to release 2 new remixes, one for french singer AV and the other one for Golden Retriever, the singer on “So Far Gone”. I’m also finished with writing the soundtrack for a short film, as well as an Indie Game called Pixel Boy. I should be writing some more, notably for another short animated film.
Crayon: Well I’m working on my first EP, and as usual a bunch of remixes. And of course, touring is another thing I want to focus on more from now on.
