Pier Esparre, The Mosaic Artist
The Parisian outsider artist Pier Esparre is a mosaic maker and Youtube videos fan, and just invented a new kind of art, mixing his two hobbies.
More exactly, he creates mosaics of all the things he loves the most, including Youtube icons, his grand-mother’s dog Siegfried, Scrabble, and sneakers.
We elected him as the Antoni Gaudi of the web culture 2.0 and interviewed him about his unusual universe.
Read it below!
How did you get the idea of making mosaics in a more modern way?
After a small wreck and accordingly, numerous days at the hospital, someone made me try mosaics as an occupational therapy and I enjoyed it right away.
What was your job before ?
I was a copywriter long time ago, then creative strategist, and then strategist / community manager… and today I just proclaimed myself ” creative – mosaic maker “, cooler than ever.
Why choose to represent Youtube videos’ vedettes as “Keyboard Cat” and the “double rainbow” ?
“My View” serie is the resulting of my two passions: mosaics and webculture. It is a “minute” consumption, free and massive, that I endlessly freeze and poetically enhances its grace, as an humble craftsman of the modernity… And, incidentally, it is also my top 10: a cat playing piano, a drugged guy crying in the woods, the Musclor and “HEYYEYAAEYAA” mash-up, very gay…
What is linking all your artworks: YouTube icons, sneakers, a dog and the Twin Towers?
These are all references to my life and to the people I love. It may appears pointless and cliché but it is simply that, and it is endlessly wide… it is mightily powerful. And the dog is Siegfried, my grand-mother’s dog, I am his favourite grand-son now.
Could we define you as the Antoni Gaudi of the web culture 2.0?
Gaudi ? More modestly: the « De Vinci of the web », on which I surf as Patrick Swayze in “Point Break“.
You’re also working on supports as a tray, a coffee table and coasters. The idea of making the public interact with your work please you?
It’s crazy, I’m aspiring to let my mosaic inhabit everything, from the Louvre to your cheese plate. Right now it is the “sneakers” mosaic which animates me, I want to put some in the restrooms of folks and why not, to cover Booba’s swimming-pool in Miami.
Who could be your next muse? A reality TV star?
Gwyneth Paltrow or Keira Knightley could do the job, but I am my proper muse, such I’m a sexy guy.
Could we expect to see an exhibition of your artworks in Paris soon?
I’d really love it, but not now, even if people seem to really love my art. I’m not that good to canvass and I’m searching someone to take me under his wings and doing the painful things in my stead.
