Kitsuné Talk : Chela
Electro princess Chela released her EP “Romanticise” last week! A successful launch, as she reached #1 on HypeMachine, had fun at our Kitsuné Club Night in Melbourne, and much more! She does seem to be in velvet.
Full of energy and good mood, we asked the cool kid a few questions! Read this Q&A while streaming her hit track on MajesticCasual, and order “Romanticise” now on iTunes or on our webstore
As an introduction, how would you describe yourself and your music with 3 adjectives?
Wild, wondrous & wandering.
You wrote “Romanticise” with your friend DCUP (Duncan) : how do you know each other and how was it to work with him?
Duncan & I share the same management team, which is how we met and eventually worked together. We’ve become great pals, he’s a top-quality sentimental guy who loves to have chats about life. I’m just about to housesit his beautiful house whilst he adventures in India, party back at my place yeah?
In interviews before, you said that you make danceable music because you just love to dance. What are your favourite tracks to dance to? And how did you come to love dancing so much?
I have been known to dance up a storm to ‘You Make My Dreams Come True’ by Hall & Oates, ‘Flathead’ by The Fratellis, ‘Dare Me’ by The Pointer Sisters, ‘Wildfire’ by SBTRKT, ‘Dashboard’ by Modest Mouse, ‘Pressure Down’ by John Farnham & ‘The Way You Move’ by Outkast just to name a few. I had a lot of dance training as a kid, but I believe it’s not the technique that matters – it’s the feel. The thing that makes me want to move the most is a monster inside of me that gets woken up by music. I’ve had that feeling inside of me since forever.
How was it playing at the Kitsuné Club Night in Melbourne? And even more with Clubfeet with whom you already collaborated? Did you enjoy it?
I’m often the mascot at their DJ shows & dance alongside them onstage! I love those guys, I come on tour with them whenever I can just to sing one song (Heartbreak). The Melbourne Kitsuné show was one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve ever played. The crowd were mostly a bunch of cool kids gagging to get smashed and have fun, so they made the party atmosphere perfect. I always like finding something to climb onto for a dance, so my eyes lit up when I saw that rickety old table onstage.
Do you feel like Melbourne and Australia in general are good places to start doing music? What gigs do you like to attend?
I do, Australia births some extremely talented motherfuckers! I’d say the best music scene is in Melbourne, and there’s plenty of opportunities. It’s a small country though, so if you want to have a big career in music you have to make it work overseas. The Corner Hotel, Northcote Social Club, Worker’s Club & The Toff In Town host a lot of great shows so I keep up to date with their calendars.
How did you end up signing on Kitsuné for your EP “Romanticise”? How is it to work with us? And be honest!
Honestly, I wish I knew the Kitsuné team better! My management do most of the talking which is to be expected. One day I hope to come to Paris and see all of your fresh-fancy-French faces. I believe Gildas emailed my manager-man Jerry with interest, to which Jerry sent some of my demos. Once Gildas heard Romanticise it was a match made in heaven. I was over the moon to hear Kitsuné were keen because I already had big love for the label.
Okay, now if you were (and why?) :
– a natural site : Boracay Island because I’m tropical, tourist chic & you can see a volcano off in the distance so there’s a troubling mystery amidst all the adventure & charm.
– a song : Romanticise, because I created it & I know it so well, and just like real-life you’d go on forever adding parts & making adjustments if you could.
– a club : The LuWow in Melbourne, post PA upgrade. A few of my friends said it reminds them of my bedroom because it looks like a jungle.
– an animal : A marmoset, the most affectionate of the monkey family. If it bites you, you’ll only bleed a little.
– a colour : Gold because it’s warm & reflective, and likes to party.
– a city : Melbourne because it has all the different seasons and a million secret places that are a surprise to discover, but only after time.
– a band : Howlin’ Pele & Yolandi Visser fronting a band made up of Prince on guitar, the Jackson 5 on bass/keytars/dance moves, Kwon Soon Keun on drums and The Pointer Sisters as backing singers. Shit, did I just disrespect a whole bunch of my idols?
– a flower : Bird Of Paradise because it tricks you into thinking it’s a bird.
– an hour of the day : Golden hour because it seems to be magic, but it’s not. Or is it?
– a dish : Icecream, because I’m hungry right now and boy do I have a sweet tooth. Oh that reminds me, I have to call the dentist.
