Galerie Kitsuné is pleased to present “Act Like I’m Not Here,” an exhibition and book launch by Conrad Clifton, a Brooklyn-based photographer, music producer, DJ and educator. Featuring street scenes, portraits and abstract works, the show displays unobserved moments and people, taken for granted in everyday life. The title is a play on words, something a photographer might say to give their subject comfort, but also a statement that says, “I won’t disappear, just because you act like I’m not here”.
Xeara Tiara, the book’s cover image which was awarded Editors’ Pick for Life Framer: Urban Life Photography Competition, is a perfect example of Conrad pursuing effortless strength and beauty in his shots. As a person of color, familiar with being overlooked and underrepresented, he strives to show Black and Brown people in a confident light and to challenge the viewer to experience layers of meaning beneath the surface.
ABOUT CONRAD CLIFTON
Conrad Clifton is a Brooklyn-based film photographer, music producer, DJ and label founder. His images, like his music, focus on themes of self-reflection, empathy and perseverance. For his exhibition at Galerie Kitsuné, Conrad will present a series of signed photographs, as well as a new book.
His work is about storytelling, inspiring the viewer to contemplate the lives of his subjects. Whether it’s a photo of an unhoused individual, or a member of an underrepresented community using fashion as expression, Conrad feels a personal connection and needs to share these images.

Galerie Kitsuné is pleased to welcome it’s first exhibition featuring “A chair is a chair is a chair” by Mexican artist Mario Navarro & balcony magazine.
“A chair is a chair is a chair” opens March 17, 2022 at Galerie Kitsuné, Brooklyn and remains on view through April 3, 2022. Curated by balcony, the exhibition features new colored pencil drawings by Mexican artist Mario Navarro. Begun as a pastime during the height of the Covid lockdown, the drawings included in this exhibition are a humorous, at times biting meditation on the precarity of Modernism. ‘Chair No 14’, a classic design by German-Austrian designer Michael Thonet, plays the title character in a series of pencil-on-paper drawings which toy, twist, and play with ideas of appropriation, consumption, and permanence. Organized in collaboration with balcony magazine’s second issue, “A chair is a chair is a chair” connects scenes from the everyday with an iconic subject of Modernist design.
This is the first exhibition curated by balcony, a bi-annual print magazine dedicated to art in the everyday.

In “FREE PLAY” we follow photographer Jonpaul Douglass everywhere and nowhere as he lets each colorful moment inform the next, reminding us all to stop and smell the Los Angeles.
“For me, “FREE PLAY” is a creative process that is about starting from nothing and being open to anything that pulls your attention, and then playing on that. Getting into that state of mind that is pure seeing and pure feeling — there is nothing quite like it.
These images are about that feeling — the joy of capturing a piece of a mysterious and never-ending cosmic puzzle. While in many ways this work is a love letter to Los Angeles, it’s also a love letter to the practice of photography.”

Christina Zimpel Exclusive Exhibition
From September 9th to November 14th, we’re pleased to welcome Christina Zimpel for the exclusive paintings and drawings exhibition “Bright Eyes” at Maison Kitsuné New York Perry-Archives & Gallery.
Christina Zimpel grew up in Australia loving glam rock and punk, the Fauves and pop art, black and white photography and dreaming of New York City where she now lives. This collection is all about cities – the characters, the banal observances, and recurring dreams of sleepless nights. To sit by the tree, to notice the bird, to love the kooks.
The palette is subversively fluorescent or reduced to black and white. People’s faces are distilled to a few bold lines, just enough to relate to.

“Sometimes different words may essentially have the same meaning, and the same words may point to different concepts. A certain ambiguity can give people more room to use their imagination.”
What Li Hui, visual artist whose work is primarily based in photography, wants to show is the sheer diversity of nature and life, that even though society promotes uniformity, human interaction can overcome social constraints. She tries to explore or even create the unknown, and focus on visible but easily overlooked intimate details, observing and maintaining this awe of human nature and complexity.”
