Maison Kitsuné x Kilo Kish – Capsule Collection

Add a little bit of Kilo Kish to you summer wardrobe!

With summer’s arrival already in mind, we’re happy to bring you our latest capsule collaboration with one of our favorite American songwriter and visual artist Kilo Kish!

Inspired by Maison Kitsuné’s French roots and the classic American summer, Kilo Kish brings to life an exclusive collection for the brand: “With an effortlessly French label such as Maison Kitsuné, I thought to design pieces that represented some of the more endearing American traditions.”

Celebrated for her uniquely feminine rap style, Kilo Kish has been named “Artist to Watch” by Rolling Stone, MTV along others and she’s won the adoration of the fashion industry, as she is often described as a “style star” gracing the pages of magazines including Vogue, Elle, Glamour and Nylon. With one foot in fashion and the other in music, Kish’s collaboration with Maison Kitsuné was a natural fit for the multi-faceted brand.

The capsule collection consists of lightweight t-shirts and sweatshirt plus accessories such as an iPhone case, scarf and tote bag, featured with stripes in red, white and blue. “The colors and stripes are a play on both the French and American flags – the tote bag actually has the French flag on one side and American on the other! Last but not least, I wanted everything to pair best with an American classic, blue jeans,” she explains.

Captured by French photographer Alice Moitié, the Maison Kitsuné x Kilo Kish collection is now available in all boutiques and online!

#KitsuneAmerica 4 – At the Drive In With Joyce Wrice!

Kitsuné is taking you to the movies for its 4th Kitsuné America Episode... A brand new compilation coming to your ears on May 25th!

On May 25th Kitsuné is releasing its 4th #KitsuneAmerica compilation! Full of new gems coming freshly from the States, we’re taking you day by day closer to the musicians!

Based in Los Angeles, Joyce Wrice is another singer/songwriter plotting the future of soul within an electronic context. Dangerously languorous ‘Home Alone’ is a slow, slightly schizophrenic r’n’b smoocher that’s hard to resist.

After a ride to the drive in with us, the beautiful Joyce gave us her own city guide of her hometown: Los Angeles!

What is your favourite museum in Los Angeles ?

I was able to watch a short film by Kahlil Joseph at The Underground Museum and ever since my first trip there, I couldn’t stop myself from not going back there! In addition to the beautiful interior design, they have so many great books, and vinyl records for you to read and listen to.

The best place to have a drink ?

I like Bar Nine and Jerry’s Flying Fox!

The nicest walk?

The nicest walks I’ve had are the ones with dogs that are up for adoption. We walk and run around the Fairfax and Melrose area and it’s very therapeutic for me.

The best place to eat?

The Serving Spoon! They also have a really good music playlist and that’s always a plus for me.

The best club or venue in town?

I haven’t been to too many clubs in LA. I follow my DJ friends around like Sean g, Siik, PJ and Drewbyrd and go to whatever club they’re playing at. For live shows, I really like the Bootleg Theater. I saw KING and Quadron there and left feeling super elated.

Kitsuné Talk : Kilo Kish

After releasing Kilo Kish first EP ‘Across’ yesterday, the time has come for Kitsuné Journal to sit with our cute Fall/Winter 2014 lady.

We talked music, fashion and somehow her creative mind – Read all about it !

How did music come into your life?

Pretty much by accident, I had a roommate in college, Smash Simmons, who had an at home studio set up where I would fool around. Then eventually I met up with Matt Martians from the Internet and he really helped me to explore my own thing more with my first stab at music, the homeschool ep.

“Across” : A meaningful title ?

Yeah I always thought that word has so much movement and can mean so many things. It’s taken from the cross country drive I did last summer where I was hoping to cross into some other place geographically and mentally.

This EP is a 8-track piece. Which message are you trying to communicate with this EP?

It’s the truest and most straightforward music I’ve ever made. I was trying to communicate the ups and downs in my thinking process while traveling a symbolic road. across america, across growing up. I was trying to communicate movement. And how being in your twenties (or any other age) is not necessarily about moving forward or backward, just across.

You had tracks featured on two Kitsuné compilations, you appear on our Fall/Winter 2014 lookbook and you’re about to release your debut EP “Across”. You’re definitely part of the Maison Kitsuné family now ! How does it feel ?

I love Kitsuné! Its actually a perfect fit. I love that you’re always interested in finding and discovering new and interesting music. I’ve also shot campaigns with a lot of brands and the clothes are cool, but it never really feels like ME, but with kitsune I really love everything. I really want everything! And I can’t wait to work together more, such an awesome team of creatives.

You shot the Maison Kitsuné lookbook in London, far from your [LA] home. What’s your favorite and least favorite things about this city ?

My favorite and least favorite part of London is how grey and damp it seems when i’ve been there. I love a good rainy day every now and then, but also need a lot of sun as not to get depressed. I think I would make some very moody music there, which could be cool!

What’s your must have for a casual winter outfit?

I love a good cable knit sweater or a fluffy furry pastel sweater. If it’s not too cold I like a nice leather motorcycle jacket and a loose pant.

Complete the sentence: “You should never go out of the house without…”

…stay inside and eat pizza.

Maison Kitsuné is all about Music, Fashion and Parties – Who would you : listen to, wear, hang out with ?

Listen to : Michael Jackson
Wear : Maison Kitsuné, A.P.C., FUBU, Christopher Kane, Chanel
Hang out with : Soulja Boy, Katt Williams, Mike Epps

Meet Guillaume Wolf And His Circle Experiment

The Circle Experiment is a new crowd funded film project made by our frien Guillaume Wolf, a French-born artist based in Los Angeles, California. With dark imagery and an eerie atmosphere, The Circle Experiment only uses animated photographs to tell the story.

We spoke with Wolf to find out what is the experiment all about…

Watch The Circle Experiment trailer:

What’s The Circle Experiment?

The Circle Experiment is a film adaptation of my indie concept book You Are A Circle (a selection of the TED Conference bookstore 2013). The story begins when a woman wakes up in the middle of the desert, wearing a strange astronaut outfit. In her mind, she thinks she’s a simple housewife; but as she tries to find out what happened to her, she slowly realizes that everything she knew about her life is now gone.

Can you tell us more about the book?

You Are A Circle is a book about creativity and life. It’s is a bit of an exercise in minimalism. Visually, there are aphorisms on the left pages that are echoed by repeating handmade black circles on the right page (that are always different). Quotes plus circle, quotes plus circle, etc. What happens with this book is that, as the reader flips through it, the relationship between the images and the text creates a third narrative that’s unique to each reader.

What inspired you to develop the book into a film?

It’s about pushing myself and see how far I can take my creative process. I see creative life as being an adventure: you never stop growing.

For the film, in terms of visual aesthetic and narrative, where do you draw inspiration from?

The Circle Experiment is an homage to Chris Marker La Jetée, a film that had a huge impact on me. I’m using a similar technique of animating still photographs together to tell the story. It’s a process I find really mesmerizing. It’s quite the opposite of the 3D-cinema-junkfood we see everywhere these days. It’s a very zen-like process.

Why did you choose crowd funding through Kickstarter for this project?

Kickstarter is an experiment in itself! [laughs] For me, crowd funding is a way to connect directly with an audience, but also a way to create something together. Being an independent artist, it’s a perfect venue for what I do. So far the response has been fantastic.

What are the themes you’re exploring in this project?

I’m exploring themes that have to do with reality, identity and loss. I find these themes fascinating. For example: Would your identity change if you lived in a entirely different world? I think these ideas interest me because, as an immigrant, living in a really different world, I’m confronted with them everyday.

We’ve read that in your film, you describe a new frontier you call “the Trinary Field.” What is that exactly?

I see it from a poetic perspective. It’s a space that’s the product of the relationship between our biology and psychology. It’s really curious. You and I may see the same things, but we perceive them completely differently according to this relationship. It’s interesting because this relationship is not static, it evolves all the time—and this forces us to ask this question: who are we, really? That’s the greatest mystery of human existence: who we are today is not who we will be tomorrow. That’s both interesting and a bit scary at the same time.

Both the book and the film are meant to inspire emotion and thought. What do you hope people will take away from these?

It’s an interesting question. You know, I’ve learned that, in reality, it depends entirely on the person who discovers these projects. It’s a different experience each time. But if I’m able to help someone think about their life in an empowering way, and give him/her something that can uplift his/her spirit a bit; then I’ll be happy with that. Bringing a little bit of thinking, a little bit of hope… that’s all I try to achieve, really.

Is life an experiment?

An experiment? Maybe… An adventure? Absolutely.
